King Boris

On April 14, 1925 the car of the King was ambushed in the Arabakonak pass and two of the accompanying officials were killed.

King Boris III employed all his diplomatic skills to retain the country's neutrality. His ambition to keep Bulgaria as an island of peace amidst the sea of raging war conflicts, succeeded as much as was possible. After repeatedly turning down Germany's requests, Bulgaria yielded to the pressure and joined the Tripartite Pact on March 1, 1940. Germany dispatched Fieldmarshal von List's army along the Danube river banks. Hitler stated "It would be better if as allies, because we'll drive in anyway!". Yet Bulgaria was the sole Axis member which continued to maintain diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union and stayed out of combat.
